Priest dons soccer jersey during Mass
Fr. Fernando Hernandez, above, pastor of St. Patrick's, St. Mary's and Our Lady of the Lake Church in Newburgh, NY, ended one of his September Masses at St. Patrick's Church by putting on a Mexico soccer jersey. This is because shortly afterwards, on September 26, 2026, the Mexican soccer team was scheduled to play the Colombians. It was a way for Hernandez to cheer for the Mexican athletes who would be wearing that soccer shirt.
To play soccer and admire the game is a normal thing in sports. However, do not bring the cheering section onto the altar and do not take advantage of the Mass to express your admiration for the sport and a particular team.
To do this inside of a church dedicated to the worship of God is a profanation.
Unfortunately, it is a profanation that is becoming increasingly frequent among progressivists, who want to show that the Conciliar Church is accessible to the people; is one with the people. However, doing so, they forget God. In other words, they forget that the only reason for religion is to worship God, not the people.
