Schneider Speaks out of
Both Sides of His Mouth

Statements Now & Then

Dear TIA,

Please read the press release below issued some days ago by the SSPX in the US on Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s new statements about their organization.

I was struck by Schneider’s lack of consistency. Now, in order to justify the assimilation of the SSPX into the Conciliar Church, he downplays the importance of Vatican II, affirming that it was just a pastoral council and that its teachings are only valid for some period of time (I highlighted these two parts in bold). Thus, with regard to such an unimportant Council, it would make no difference whether Bishop Fellay’s organization supports or opposes it.

However, in another interview, which you quoted on your site, he clearly implies that Vatican II was dogmatic. Indeed, he stated:

“It is Vatican II Council that gave us a wider understanding of the Mystery of the Church according to the teaching of the Church Fathers […]. Thus, the Church is seen as ‘a people made one with the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’ (Lumen gentium 4).”

Also, at the time of Benedict XVI, Bishop Schneider was known for being a strong promoter of the “hermeneutic of continuity,” which is nothing but an attempt to establish the new teaching of Vatican II as having continuity with the past dogmatic teaching of the Church.

So, what we have is Schneider saying one thing not long ago – that Vatican II is dogmatic and very important – when the aim was to bring Traditionalists to accept Vatican II, and saying the opposite now – that Vatican II is pastoral and without importance – when the aim is to bring the entire SSPX into the fold of the Conciliar Church.

For me, this reveals the man lacks character, as do his bosses, because it would be an unforgivable naïveté to believe Schneider is not following the orders of others in the Vatican and, ultimately, of Francis.

But, why are he and his bosses saying such contradictory things? Actually, what Schneider is doing now to downplay Vatican II is just in order to assimilate the SSPX; afterwards, when the assimilation is made, he will come out with a denial, saying that he was misinterpreted, and Vatican II will continue to be as important as it has always been...

The foxes are anticipating the banquet they will have with so many chickens in the coop ready to catch…

Keep up the good work, TIA.

I am one of your daily readers,

     In Christ Jesus,

SSPX has mind of Church: Bishop Schneider

by the District of the USA

August 10, 2015 - Auxiliary Bishop Schneider has affirmed the SSPX thinks with the Church's mind. Hence, there should be no serious reason for denying the priestly society full canonical recognition.

From the blog, Rorate Caeli [the Spanish-language version, Adelante la Fe], we offer some extracts from a recent interview of Bishop Athanasius Schneider concerning the SSPX and other matters of the post-conciliar crisis.

Note that we have rearranged the order of the interview questions/answers.

Adelante la Fe: Your Excellency has recently visited the SSPX seminaries in the United States and France. We know it was a "discreet" meeting but, can you make an evaluation for us of what you saw and talked with them about? What expectations do you have of a coming reconciliation and which would be the main obstacle for it?

Bishop Schneider: The Holy See asked me to visit the two seminaries of the SSPX in order to conduct a discussion on a specific theological topic with a group of theologians of the SSPX and with His Excellency Bishop Fellay.

Athanasius Schneider

Bishop Athanasius Schneider

For me this fact shows that for the Holy See the SSSPX is not a negligible ecclesiastical reality and that it has to be taken seriously. I am keeping a good impression of my visits. I could observe a sound theological, spiritual and human reality in the two seminaries.

The "sentire cum ecclesia" of the SSPX is shown by the fact that I was received as an envoy of the Holy See with true respect and with cordiality. Furthermore, I was glad to see in both places in the entrance area a photo of Pope Francis, the reigning Pontiff. In the sacristies there were plates with the name of Pope Francis and the local diocesan bishop. I was moved to assist the traditional chant for the pope ("Oremus pro pontifice nostro Francisco…") during the solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

To my knowledge there are no weighty reasons in order to deny the clergy and faithful of the SSPX the official canonical recognition, meanwhile they should be accepted as they are. This was indeed Archbishop Lefebvre’s petition to the Holy See: "Accept us as we are".

I think the issue of Vatican II should not be taken as the "conditio sine qua non", since it was an assembly with primarily pastoral aims and characteristics. A part of the conciliar statements reflects only its time and possesses a temporary value, as disciplinary and pastoral documents do. When we look in a two millennia old perspective of the Church, we can state, that there is on both sides (Holy See and the SSPX) an over-evaluation and over-estimation of a pastoral reality in the Church, which is Vatican II.

When the SSPX believes, worship and conducts a moral live as it was demanded and recognized by the Supreme Magisterium and was observed universally in the Church during a centuries long period and when the SSPX recognizes the legitimacy of the pope and the diocesan bishops and prays for them publicly and recognizes also the validity of the sacraments according to the editio typica of the new liturgical books, this should suffice for a canonical recognition of the SSPX on behalf of the Holy See.

Otherwise the often repeated pastoral and ecumenical openness in the Church of our days will manifestly lose its credibility and the history will one day reproach to the ecclesiastical authorities of our days that they have "laid on the brothers greater burden than required" (cf. Acts 15:28), which is contrary to the pastoral method of the Apostles.

‘Mind of the Church’

God bless you, TIA!

Oh yes, Bishop Fellay has the mind of the Church, but has Bishop Schneider the mind of Christ?

Satan attacks from every angle. It is disheartening that the main attack was from within the Church. Satanic infiltrators at Vatican II, disguised as Catholic hierarchy, rendered all of us vulnerable to the reprobate secular world. The floodgates are  fully opened, now that the Supreme Court has joined the atheists of the world. With fear and trepidation, I expect some pervert to sue a priest for maintaining the natural law.

These Vatican II infiltrators are the worst heretics of all time. In the past, people such as Luther, Calvin, Knox, Henry VIII, et alia at least had the honesty to walk out of the Church, and not hate the Church so severely as to undermine the Church from within.

I pray that you are well.

     In Maria,

     J.S.
