Leo XIV to heretics: 'We are already one!'
In the solemn Vespers ceremony that took place on January 25, 2026 at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls, above, Pope Leo XIV delivered a homily to the representatives of heretical sects present at that act.The occasion was the closing of the Week of Prayer for the Unity of Christians, January 18-25. The many heretics present, simply speaking, believe in Jesus Christ.
The central point of the homily was when Pope Prevost, addressing the heretics, said these words: "We are one! We already are! Let us recognize it, experience it and make it visible!"
The context of these words is the paragraph in which the Pope quotes his previous Apostolic Letter In Unitate Fidei, issued two months ago:
In the passage from the Letter to the Ephesians chosen as the theme for this year’s Week of Prayer, we repeatedly hear the adjective “one”: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God (cf. Eph 4:4-6). Dear brothers and sisters, how can these inspired words not touch us deeply? How can our hearts not burn within us when we hear them? Yes, “we share the same faith in the one and only God, the Father of all people; we confess together the one Lord and true Son of God, Jesus Christ, and the one Holy Spirit, who inspires us and impels us towards full unity and the common witness to the Gospel” (Apostolic Letter In Unitate Fidei, 23 November 2025, 12). We are one! We already are! Let us recognize it, experience it and make it visible!
These words lead us to a simple commentary: Since the heretic sects whose representatives were present at that ceremony have a variety of doctrinal errors that caused the Catholic Church to declare them separate from the True Faith, and since none of them have changed their doctrines to accept the Catholic Faith, the words of Pope Leo XIV, are not only wrong, but nonsensical.
To pretend that the few points these heretical sects have in common with the Catholic Church – belief in God, in the Trinity and in Jesus Christ – make her one with them is as absurd as to pretend that the Catholic Church is one with the Devil, who also believes those same points.
As a matter of fact, to believe in these points and then present subtle errors about the procession of the Persons of the Trinity, the two natures of Christ, the Transubstantiation in the Eucharist, the role of Mary Mother of God, the Petrine Papacy and many others, make these heretics much more dangerous than pagans, Jews and Muslims who blatantly deny those fundaments.
Therefore, they are not one with the Catholic Faith; they are its worse enemies.
If these words – "We are already one!" – were taken seriously, they would make it clear that the Progressivist Church as an ensemble has officially abandoned the Catholic Faith
What those words also reveal is the despair of the Post-Conciliar Church in pushing forward an ecumenism that is stuck in the mud. It resorts to the weight of papal authority to impose something that no one actually believes. In other words, we know that we are not one with any heretical sect.
