Pope Prevost receives rabbis

Above, we see Pope Leo XIV greeting a rabbi representing the Jewish community at Clementine Hall on May 19, 2025. This was at a general ceremony held for all the representatives of false religions who went to Rome for the inauguration Mass of the Pontiff.

Below, we see him warmly greeting Romanian rabbi Moshe Carmilly-Weinberger in a ceremony at the Sistine Chapel. Indeed, on June 2, 2025, Prevost commemorated the life of Bishop Iuliu Hossu of Cluj-Gherla, who had been made a Cardinal in pectore (in the heart, that is, in secret) by Paul VI in 1969. During the Nazi occupation of Romania, Bishop Hossu made many efforts to protect the Jews.

During the communist occupation of Romania, Hossu opposed the government and heroically refused to abandon the Catholic Faith to enter the so-called Orthodox Church as mandated by the regime. He was imprisoned from 1948 to 1964, and then remained under house arrest until May 1970, when he died.

On June 2, 2019, during his visit to Romania, Francis beatified Iuliu Hossu. Six years later, Leo took advantage of the anniversary of this beatification to improve his relations with the Jews and to promote Vatican II. Actually, he drew a parallel between Hossu’s example and the teaching of Nostra Aetate, the Vatican Il’s declaration on the Church’s relation to non-Christian religions:

“What he did for the Jews of Romania,” the Pope said, “today makes him a model of freedom, courage and generosity, even to the point of making the supreme sacrifice.”

The president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, rabbi Silviu Vexler, second row below, holding a red religious scroll, had a place of honor, in the first row of chairs, alongside Romanian civil authorities.
