Francis opens a Jubilee Door in a prison
When a Jubilee Year is opened, the custom of the Church is to open seven doors of five basilicas in Italy and two in other countries. Namely, they are the door of Saint Peter's Basilica, Saint John the Lateran Basilica, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, and the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Wall, all of these in Rome. The doors of the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio in Aquila, Italy, the Cathedral of Santiago of Compostela in Spain and Notre Dame Cathedral in Quebec, Canada are also opened. For the Jubilee of Hope, which started with the opening the door of Saint Peter's Basilica on December 25, 2024, Pope Bergoglio decided to change this custom. The second door he opened was on December 26, at the chapel of the Rebibbia Prison – see the photos on this page. Later on that day during the Angelus he called the prison "the cathedral of pain and hope."
In the brief homily during the Mass, he stressed: "It is a beautiful gesture, that of being wide open; open: open the doors." Then he went on to apply that gesture to the opening of one's heart.
Knowing the habit of Francis to make gestures with revolutionary goals, we wonder if he was not sending a message to the Italian authorities to pardon those criminals and free them from their sentences by "opening wide the doors" of the prison.
