Queen Matilde 1

Do visit the less fortunate

In the photos on this page we see Queen Mathilde of Belgium on a trip to Costa Rica in February of 2025. There she visited various children's homes – Casas de la Alegria, Houses of Joy – in the capital city of San José, above, and in Paso Canoas.

Dressed with dignity and refined good taste, she clearly made a good impression on those simple children. We praise her for not buying into the myth that nobles should present themselves in sloppy garb when visiting the poor in order not to incite jealousy or revolt.

Here we see the opposite. All the children were fascinated by her royal charm and grace, and honored to have a true Queen visiting them. We see that for them this was an event that will mark their lives forever: "We met Queen Mathilde of Belgium."

It is admirable that she made the effort to travel from Belgium to Costa Rica on a commercial flight to show her concern for these less fortunate children. It is certainly an example of Catholic charity to be imitated.

Do visit the less fortunate.
