Venezuela: Tragedies & Lessons
A serious drama deserves a serious analysis.
I am speaking about the powerful twin earthquakes on June 24, 2026 that killed thousands, injured many more and left behind immense destruction.
It is not difficult to reach the conclusion that these earthquakes were a sound and terrible chastisement.
Let me first analyze the history that preceded these dramatic facts that shook the entire continent.
Venezuela, as well as all of the Hispanic America, was born from Christian Civilization. Soon after the discovery of America, the New Kingdom of Granada was established including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama. In those promising lands an epoch began where “the philosophy of the Gospel governed the nations,” as Pope Leo XIII affirmed of the Middle Ages (Immortale Dei, November 1, 1885).
Truth and order shone. Universities, the fine arts and good customs flourished in these Viceroyalty times, while the nations grew in prosperity, culture and true wisdom. Conflicts were absent and peace was constant in those 300 harmonious years from 1500 to 1800.
However, that civilized and civilizing well-being broke with the arrival of the French Revolution and its principles of a socialist and pre-communist equality and fraternity. Disorder entered the picture, bringing endless civil wars; in the 19th century we had around 10 wars including the Thousand-Days’ War of Colombia, which started in October 1899.
Later, we witnessed graces of reconciliation between the conservatives and liberals of the times, as confirmed by the Church of the National Vow to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Statesmen of high eminence illustrated our History such as Garcia Moreno in Ecuador and Miguel Antonio Caro in Colombia, as well as Saints such as St. Ezequiel Moreno Diaz, whose pastoral letters condemning the relativist and liberal spirit are still impressive and timely today.
Prosperity and growth were also stimulated by the local traditions, families and the institute of private propriety. These foundations of good society were attacked either openly or in a camouflaged way by Modernism and the Left. Property was particularly targeted
per the instruction of Karl Marx: “Our revolution is summed up in the abolition of private property.”
The most significant event of that period was the warnings from God sent through His Most Holy Mother at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. These warnings spoke of a great chastisement and the rise of communist governments, which was already taking place. The “errors of Russia” Our Lady spoke against, along with their corresponding revolutionary accomplices, later bore its bad fruit in successive dictatorships and illegitimate governments in Venezuela, which have continued to the present day, as well as in Colombia for past four years following a massive and undeniable electoral fraud.
God rewards us with miracles and magnificent shrines and even economic prosperity, but He reprimands us with inevitable punishments, mainly when we openly challenge Him. To have tempted God was the cause of all that we are seeing in the recent Venezuelan cataclysm.
The true causes
The true cause for the catastrophe started during the pro-socialist government of Jaime Lusinchi, who upon assuming the presidency in Venezuela in 1984 made clear his intention to destroy the known organization Tradition Family and Property, TFP. He promoted such a ferocious general media campaign against the TFP in that country that it obliged its young members to flee the country. Under Lusinchi’s baton all the social, political and religious forces of the country plotted against TFP.
This persecution – which involved the three branches of power, executive, judicial and legislative – took place in 1984, 42 years ago, characterizing a sin of national significance. The TFP was recognized as the largest anti-communist organization in the world.
Except for one lady, there were no representative voices to defend those persecuted members. This was an injustice that called to Heaven for vengeance and brought down a curse, which fell over the entire country with 28 years of communist dictatorship and culminated in the recent mighty earthquakes.
In 1984, at a short distance from the epicenter of the recent earthquake, lived one of the main protagonists of that persecution, a congressional representative and head of a Voodoo sect that adores goddess Maria Lionza. This sect had and still has the headquarters of its Satanic rituals at La Sorte Mountain in San Felipe.
When a pious procession was made this June 24, 2026 on St. John’s Feast Day asking God for protection from earthquakes, the followers af Maria Lionza entered the procession beating drums, dancing and shouting: “Shake, let the earth shake! Let it shake!” Such an aggressive challenge to God did not take long to be answered: Almost immediately after, on that same day, God send the two disastrous earthquakes that rocked Venezuela!
On this topic one of the TFP exiles remarked: “Venezuela is a country with a lot of Satanism. And the epicenter of the earthquake was only 50 miles from the ‘sacred’ mountain of the Satanic sect of Maria Lionza. It is good to remember that this witch was in Congress when the trial of the Venezuelan TFP took place.”
In various speeches both Chaves and Maduro had referred to TFP as “that fascist organization which is the worst enemy of the Bolivarian Revolution.”
It seems to me very important to analyze the causes in face of such overwhelmingly catastrophic effects. Indeed, until this moment there are more than 3,500 dead, 50,000 more whose whereabouts are not known, and more than 30,000 buildings destroyed or damaged, leaving multitudes without roofs or resources. It is unknown how the government will remove the rubble and restore the buildings when the Venezuela’s most powerful man Diosdado Cabello has forbidden humanitarian help to the country’s victims.
There have been other times when the government has arrogantly challenged God. In 1999, dictator Hugo Chaves raised his fist to Heaven in defiance and said: “If God or nature opposes the Bolivarian Revolution, we will fight against them.” Immediately afterward torrential rains – known as the “Vargas Tragedy” – poured down from the skies, causing flash floods and debris flows that killed more than 60,000 people, devastating the countryside and cities. But, neither the government nor the Venezuelan people converted and very few even remember it.
We live in times when the Catholic Hierarchy should raise its voice and promote public acts of prayers and requests for assistance to the Most Holy Virgin and her Divine Son in the many sanctuaries Venezuela has, as has been done in similar situations in the past. We have seen in Venezuela’s past episodes where the Virgin was invoked and we were miraculously saved from earthquakes, as in fact happened in the present-day catastrophe here. But today the Prelates are silent, neither preaching the healthy Catholic doctrine nor fighting against iniquity.
Some persons might wonder: Why did so many innocent people have to die for these unfortunate causes? We believe that the innocent received a type of reward from God who saved them from the torrent of iniquity that surrounded them. We pray for them.
We also thank Our Lady for having saved us and so many others and pray that we all will profit from this lesson and, by our example, work to restore the life and institutions of our beloved neighbor Venezuela, treading the path that leads to Our Lord Jesus Christ.
May the Most Holy Virgin protect us from the many catastrophes that she predicted in 1917 and move those who do have not heeded her warning to change their ways.
