Nos Autem Gloriari

Introit Chant for Maundy Thursday

Nos autem gloriari (“But it behooves us to glory”) is the introit chant for the Mass of Maundy Thursday, and is based on Galatians 6:14 and Psalm 66:2.

It emphasizes how the suffering and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross is a source of glory for Catholics. In his Liturgical Year, Dom Gueranger explains: “The Church is filled with gratitude for this Her Redeemer, who has made Himself our salvation, by dying for us; our life, by the Bread of heaven He has given us; and our resurrection, by His having risen from the grave.” (1)

Nos autem gloriari is here interpreted by Pro Cantione Antiqua.

Lyrics:

Latin text

Nos autem gloriari oportet
In cruce Domini nostri Jesu Christi:
In quo est salus, vita, et resurrectio nostra:
Per quem salvati et liberati sumus.
Ps. Deus misereatur nostri, et benedicat nobis:
Illuminet vultum suum super nos,
Et misereatur nostri.
Nos autem.

English translation:

But it behooves us to glory
In the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ:
In whom is our salvation, life and resurrection;
By whom we are saved and delivered.
Ps. May God have mercy on us and bless us;
May the light of His countenance shine upon us;
And may He have mercy on us.
But it behooves us.
