Semi-naked Indians dance in Brazilian church
Semi-nude men of the folkloric group Caiapós de São José are seen above rehearsing inside St. Benedict Church in the city of Poços de Caldas in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Feast of St. Benedict in that city is commemorated on the days of May 1-13 every year with a daily schedule of events. St. Benedict is the Patron Saint of the Black people in Brazil, and these commemorations are linked to the liberation of the slaves (May 13) and the assistance the Caiapós Indians used to give to the slaves before their freedom. We view these festivities favorably.
However, even though this rehearsal does not appear to have been performed during a Mass, it is not proper to dance inside the House of God, which should be a place of recollection, prayer and peace. Above all, do not bring semi-naked people inside the church for any reason.
The parish priest of that church and his Bishop should be held accountable for such a profanation.
