Semi-nude dancers profane Paderborn Cathedral
In a "cultural event" to commemorate the 1,250 years of Westphalia, Paderborn Archbishop Ugo Marcus Bentz hired the ensemble Bodytalk to perform inside his Cathedral in the space around the altar. The performance had three dancers: two men with naked torsos – one with a long hair and a woman's skirt – and one woman. Each of the three held a dead chicken wrapped in diapers; during their dances they played with the dead animals throwing them in the air and shaking them to move their wings as if flying. As they danced they sang "Meat is meat" to the tune of the 1984 Austrian pop song "Live is life."
The performance raised strong indignation among Catholics, and 20,000 of them signed a petition addressed to their Archbishop and the Apostolic Nuncio asking not only for a public apology, but for "an act of penance with a re-consecration of the Cathedral of Paderborn, which was desecrated by this performance."
Archbishop Bentz issued an apology alleging he was unaware of the content of the performance. No act of penance or re-consecration has taken place to this day... The profanation took place on May 19, 2025, the apology was made on May 29. The Nuncio and the Vatican were silent on that occasion and remain silent...
