Jesuit Indian Mass

Native Masses in the U.S.
Above, a Jesuit wearing an Indian headdress says a Mass at the Tekakwitha Conference in Fargo, North Dakota. Below, Bishop Donald Pelotte of Gallup, New Mexico, says a outdoors Mass following the Vatican II teaching of inculturation: the sacred vessels and baskets are made of sweet grass and reed the altar is covered with an Indian blanket. In the second row below, Pelotte delivers a sermon at a podium with a sculpture of an Indian totem.

Initiatives like these are preparing Catholic opinion for the emergence of an Indian rite as the expression of a local Native Church.
