Papal Nuncio giving Communion to Kerry
On June 22, 2006, during the installation Mass of Archbishop Donald Wuerl, center, as head of the Archdiocese of Washington, the Papal Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, at right, gives Communion in the hand to Senator John Kerry. Archbishop Wuerl was recently named to replace Cardinal McCarrick.
As everyone knows, Kerry stands for the legalization of abortion in the United States, among other liberal issues.
It has been said that Benedict XVI would be strongly against giving Communion to politicians who support positions at variance with Catholic Morals.
If this is the case, then should we imagine that the Vatican forgot to inform the personal representative of the Pope in the United States about this papal stance? It is a hypothesis difficult to believe.
Most probably, the Papal Nuncio is obeying a norm that comes from the Vatican itself.
