JPII wears a mantle representing the Temple of Jerusalem
John Paul II ordered a special cope to wear for the opening of the millennium ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica. The colors of the vestment were chosen to "represent the Temple of Jerusalem," according to Vatican sources. Yet another symbolic concession to Judaism by a conciliar Pope.
Inside the Vatican magazine (February 2000, p. 12) reported the fact:
"This year John Paul chose special colors to highlight the uniqueness of the bi-millennial Jubilee. On Christmas Eve, he wore a holy mantle the likes of which had never before been seen in St. Peter's! Its colors were flashy blues, reds, and golds - representing the Temple of Jerusalem, according to Vatican sources."
