What People Are Asking
Where Can I Find
Stories that Teach Catechism?
Hello, Dr. Horvat,
I really enjoyed reading your examples in catechism. I found your site quite by accident when looking for the title by Chisholm, Catechism in Examples. Do you know where I might find more examples like the ones on your site? (click here for Stories That Teach Catechism) Is there a book to be purchased?
Sincerely,
Elizabeth
Dr. Horvat responds:
Dear Elizabeth,
I am glad you found our site.
This method of teaching by exempla [stories that illustrate moral teachings] was always incorporated in the teaching of Catechism in the pre-Vatican II days. For example, there were the widely used I Teach Catechism manuals that followed the Baltimore Catechism. They provide stories and examples for the teacher that instruct for each question. This adds much life to the classes.
There is also, as you mentioned, the four-volume set, The Catechism in Examples, by Rev. D. Chishol that is available today, reprinted by Roman Catholic books.
Another shorter and very handy volume of exempla is The Catechist" by Rev. Canon Howe, Marian Publications.
Alphonsus de Liguori gives many stories and examples in his wonderful book The Glories of Mary.
Also, you can watch for any Medieval Readers with original source material of stories and legends from the Middle Ages.
I hope this will be of some help to you.
