The Defense against the Ultimatum
to Expel Atila Guimarães from TFP

This document is the answer that Atila Sinke Guimarães delivered on March 25, 1998, to the President of the Brazilian TFP (Tradition, Family and Property) when the latter demanded Atila to either stop the dissemination of his book In the Murky Waters of Vatican II, which had just been published in the United States, or face expulsion from the TFP, of which Atila had been a member since 1964.

The Defense published here comprises both the 1997 letter signed by the President of the Brazilian Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, and Atila’s reply.

Why TIA is posting the Defense now

In January 2017, TIA hosted an Event celebrating the publishing in English of the 11-volume Collection Eli. Eli Lamma Sabacthani? by Atila Sinke Guimarães, an accomplishment of 34 years of effort. At the Event, there were three large panels listing the landmark facts and dates in the writing and publishing of the Collection. The expulsion of Atila from the TFP and the delivering of his Defense was one of those landmarks.

Some of our supporters and friends present at that celebration asked us if they could read this Defense; others insisted that a translation of it to English should be available to the public. Dr. Marian Horvat accepted their suggestion and translated the document from Portuguese to English.

Even though the Defense was written many years ago, it seems opportune to us to circulate it now for several reasons:
  • Although Atila had 500 copies of his Defense printed in 1998 and tried to circulate it in the TFP milieu, the Directors made every effort to prevent it from being read, including issuing a prohibition to that effect. At the same time, the letter of the President was widely circulated. Since only one side of the story – and one with many falsifications as readers will see – was made accessible, it is a matter of justice that the arguments of the other side should be known.

We hope the presentation of Atila's Defense will help to make the position of Tradition in Action better understood for our own audience and also for the members and supporters of the TFP.

  • Through the years, TIA has received inquiries asking for evidence of the compromise made by the TFP directors with the ecclesiastical authorities. In effect, they promised their silence regarding any polemic on Council Vatican II, the New Mass or the post-conciliar Popes. The Defense deals with this topic in Argument II (p. 180), specifically under n. 3. De facto agreements and de jure agreements and n. 4. From implicit to explicit: the Villac Document (pp. 194-197).

  • It has been widely circulated that Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, the founder of the TFP and mentor of Atila, did not want his Collection on Vatican II published. The Defense provides ample proof to the contrary, demonstrated in the words of Prof. Plinio himself. (See Part III, pp. 40-84)
For these reasons, TIA is making the Defense available now in PDF format on our website.
