The Hermeneutics of Watermelons

It is heartbreaking to see the Pope of the Catholic Church follow an agenda set for him by neo-pagan groups such as the World Wildlife Fund. Yet this was what the world witnessed the first weekend of September.

At this time, Pope Benedict XVI led what was called the first eco-friendly youth rally in Loreto, Italy. “Pope Dons Green Vestments for Loreto Eco-Fest”; “Pope Leads Call to Save Planet”; and “Pope Sounds New Warning on Global Warming” were just some of the headlines on the event.
The two-day gathering, which was part of the Italian Bishops’ “Save Creation” Day, was billed as a run-up to World Youth Day 2008. An estimated 500,000 young people turned out for the event, most of them spending the night camped out in a field near the town.
The rally was marked by an embarrassing eco-trendiness. Each participant was given a knapsack made of recycled nylon containing a hand-cranked battery charger, three sets of biodegradable plates, and three bags for recycling trash. The prayer books for Pope Benedict’s Sunday Mass were made of recycled paper. Hydrogen cars were on display (as if a youngster could afford these big-ticket vehicles starting at $100,000), and trees were to be “planted in areas of Southern Italy recently devastated by forest fires to make up for the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the festival.”
Most embarrassing of all, Benedict’s homily – yes homily – was marked by an eco-hysteria that could have come straight from Al Gore:
"Courageous choices that can recreate a strong alliance between man and Earth must be made before it is too late.";
“We need a decisive 'yes' to care for creation and a strong commitment to reverse those trends that risk making the situation of decay irreversible.” (1)

Pope Benedict appears to be on a bit of a Green streak. At his mid-week address on September 5, he said “the protection of water resources and attention to climate change are matters of utmost importance for the entire human family.” He then announced his support for an international conference opening Sept. 6 in Greenland. Entitled “The Arctic, Mirror of Life”, Bartholomew I, Patriarch of Constantinople, who is also called the “Green Patriarch,” led the conference.
Pope Benedict also accepted an offer from a Hungarian company to plan a 15-hector (37 acre) forest that is supposed to “offset the carbon dioxide emission produced by Vatican City in 2007.” The forest, which will be planted in Hungary by the Tisza River, will be named the Vatican Climate Forest (Odd we never hear the post-Concilar Popes urge Catholics to make reparation for sin, but we can all rest easier knowing the new forest will atone for Vatican carburetors and incandescent bulbs).
Predictably, politicians praised the Pope’s Green stance. ANSA reported the Green party, which is part of Premier Romano Prodi’s center-left government, said Benedict’s Sept. 5 appeal was “extremely admirable.” (2)
Watermelons
Now it is true we are called upon to be good stewards of God’s creation, and it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of this even from non-religious sources. I grew up on those “Don’t be a litterbug” TV ads, and perhaps the message kept my street a bit cleaner than it might have been otherwise. But the tone and urgency of the Pope’s language is not that of our Catholic patrimony, but that of the leftist eco-radicals; a kind of Greenpeace in Christian dress.
One wonders who is advising the Pope on these matters. One also wonders why he seems willing to adopt the parlance of pagan groups.

The entire environmental/global warming movement is marked by socialism and anti-life policies. Why would a Pope wish to be appear Green, since the Green movement is universally recognized as synonymous with the leftist agenda. The Communist Mikhail Gorbachev, who after the alleged fall of Communism openly stated that he was still a Marxist-Leninist, founded the Gorbachev Foundation, and became a globetrotting environmentalist. Connections such as this, along with the leftist mindset of most Green leaders cause many to call environmentalists “watermelons”: green on the outside, red on the inside.

In fact, one perverted individual took a group of these eco-protestors for the chumps they are. He organized a “Naked Action for Global Warming” near his home and the turnout was tremendous. It was later revealed he couldn’t care less about global warming, but wanted to film and photograph the hundreds of young people who stripped down and romped in the woods for the event. (4)
Again, with sordid connections such as this, why does the Pope seem to be kowtowing to the Green agenda? Why adopt the language of the left: “climate change”; “sustainable development”; “alliance between man and Earth”?
Adding to the uneasiness of it all is the fact that Environmentalists strove for years to cajole religious leaders into being ambassadors for earth-advocacy.
Prince Philip: The killer virus
England’s Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband to Queen Elizabeth II and once-President of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), openly called for religious leaders to go Green, and succeeded – with the blessing of modern Catholic leaders.

In September 1986, Prince Philip organized the first inter-religious prayer assembly at Assisi, an event that preceded Pope John Paul II’s landmark pan-religious prayer meeting by one month.
At a speech delivered to a National Press Club (NPC) Luncheon in Washington, May 18, 1990, Prince Philip recounted the eco-interfaith event. He explained that 1986 was the 25th anniversary of the founding of the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). Therefore, “it was decided that Assisi would be the most appropriate place for the anniversary celebrations,” especially since St. Francis is now considered patron saint of ecology.
In his speech, Prince Philip continued:
“We suggested to the Minister General of the Order of the Friars Minor Conventional ... that he might invite leaders from the other four major faiths, that’s the Jewish, the Muslim, the Hindu and the Buddhist, to meet together in Assisi to discuss among themselves whether there was a religious aspect to the conservation of nature and what their scriptures individually have to say about the relationship with humanity to the natural world.”
In other words, as Prince Philip explained, the WWF deemed it necessary to involve the world’s religions with ecology for two reasons:
- For eco/environmental programs to be successful, it needed the religions of the world to invest it with some sort of “spiritual imperative.”
- Religious leaders can then influence their own people, especially in backward countries with high illiteracy, to support the cause of ecology and environmentalism. Prince Philip explained, “In many parts of the world, the only person with influence is the local religious leader.” (5)
Four years later, at the 1990 NPC Luncheon, Prince Philip recounted the interfaith ritual that crowned the anniversary’s events:

“At the end of the proceedings at Assisi, we all repaired to the basilica for an interfaith celebration ... Everyone was called to prayer by a Muslim muezzin in one of the towers of this Christian cathedral, and the president of the World Jewish Congress blew his ram’s horn at the door. He didn’t do it inside, but just outside. “The Hindus did a dance inside ... At the end of it the declarations on religion and nature were all blessed.” (6)
Reuters News provided a more detailed description of the pagan aberrations enacted within this Catholic basilica, in the name of unity for the environment: “After welcoming ceremonies at the Basilica, Yamini Krishnamurti, one of India’s best known temple dancers, performed a Hindu dance of creation with her red and gold sari and bangles swaying to the rhythm of live sitar music ...
“Four Buddhist monks dressed in Saffron and wearing bright yellow plumes chanted celebratory verses in deep monotone in front of the frescoes by Italian artist, Giotto.
“Toward the end of the service, a Zambian choir sang the ‘Canticle of the Creatures’ as banner holders representing all five faiths and the WWF lined up to leave the basilica.” (7)

At the conclusion of WWF’s meeting at Assisi, Prince Philip proclaimed the summit a success:
“I believe that today ... a new and powerful alliance has been forged between the forces of religion and the forces of conservation ... The spiritual leaders have learned that the natural world of creation cannot be saved without their active involvement.” (7)
Although conserving nature seems a noble crusade, one cannot turn a blind eye to the movement’s darker agenda. Investigative journalist Suzanne Rini provided a concise, accurate summary of the true goals of contemporary environmentalism:
- “To expunge as many human beings from the planet as possible ... through the devices of population control (i.e. abortion, sterilization, euthanasia, disease, and induced crisis such as war and economic collapses or depressions;
- “To extend already vast areas of primeval land to embrace equally vast amount of land inhabited and/or cultivated by human beings, thereby making it difficult to impossible for man to survive;
- “Through new science and technology, to replace man with artificial forms of genetically engineered ones.” (8)
Regarding “expunging as many human beings from the planet as possible,” Prince Philip makes no secret of the anti-human, anti-family tenets of ecology’s pagan creed. At the NPC luncheon, the Prince harnessed grand applause with the statement:
“I’m old enough to be able to say that those of you who are still at breeding age ought to be a little careful about how many you breed.”
The World Wildlife Fund itself is anti-human in its policies. One of WWF’s annual reports stated “increasing [human] population causes a drain on natural resources, which is geometric, not arithmetic... Science cannot be expected to supplant the vital processes of nature.” (9)
In 1989, WWF’s Prince Philip laid bare even further the warped philosophy of contemporary ecology. He said that were he to be reincarnated, he would wish to return as a “killer virus to lower human population levels.” (10)
Tragically, these anti-life tenets did not prevent the WWF from receiving Rome’s ecumenical embrace. On April 10, 1990, this same Prince Philip met with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. At the day’s end, Prince Philip announced to the press “From tomorrow, the WWF and the Catholic Church will cooperate together to safeguard nature.” (11)
Pope Benedict’s latest Green streak appears to be a manifestation of the alliance lauded by the anti-life Prince.
Babies bad for the planet!
Anti-life rhetoric does not spout from the World Wildlife Fund alone, but from Environmentalists across the board.
Gorbachev’s 1997 State of the World forum in San Francisco, an event billed as a building block to a new world order, gathered nearly 500 senior states-people, political leaders, spiritual leaders, scientists, intellectuals, business executives, artists and youth from 50 nations.
At the closing plenary session of this forum, Sam Keen said,
“There was very strong agreement that religious institutions have to take primarily responsibility for the population explosion. We must speak far more clearly about sexuality, about contraception, about abortion, about the values that control our population, because the ecological crisis, in short, is the population crisis. Cut the population by 90 percent and there aren’t enough people left to do a great deal of ecological damage.” (12)

Environmentalism’s crusade to reduce the population is relentless and continues to this day.
A new book by Alan Weisman titled A World Without Us calls on Americans to stop having children for the sake of the environment. He proposes a birth rate of one child per couple, at least for a few generations, which would eventually drop the population by 5 billion over the next century. His solution is simple: cut out of existence the billions of people who will contribute to global warming. Those remaining will share in “the growing joy of watching the world daily become more beautiful.” Even more disturbing than Weisman’s inhuman scheme is the fact that his book has become a mainstream best seller. (13)
Will the young people at the Pope’s youth rally become convinced that birth control could have a positive side? Despite the Catholic Church’s stance against contraception, couldn’t it be tolerated for the sake of Mother Earth. Especially since the Pope so dramatically called for the young people to save the planet “before it’s too late”?
Pope Benedict, being a Hegelian thinker, may be able to reconcile the contradiction in his own mind, but the vast majority of young people who hear the Pope’s message probably will not. The Pope says the planet needs saving. The Environmentalist say the way to save the planet is to cut back on babies. Therefore, perhaps birth control can be “moral” in the cause of ecology; and perhaps in time the retrograde Pope may come to understand this himself.
This is the message young people who have virtually no Catholic formation due to the collapse in catechesis wrought by Vatican II may very well take away from a 500,000 member “Catholic” Greenfest.
No consensus
Then there’s the “science” of man-made global warming. Isn’t anyone reminding the Pope there is no clear consensus on this point? Would not the Pope be aware of this due to his decades in Rome as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith? Why assume the eco-warriors are on the side of truth when there is considerable dissent from their position in the world of science?
And there is no shortage of literature on the subject.

James M. Taylor, senior fellow for environmental policy at the Heartland Institute, points out that a number of the alarmist statements in Al Gore’s books and in his movie An Inconvenient Truth, do not hold up to scientific scrutiny. He accuses Al Gore of distorting science and of ignoring data that defy his theory. On alleged “global warming”.
“For example”, says Taylor, “Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society’s Journal of Climate reported, ‘Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame’.”
Gore claims that global warming is the cause of the shrinking snowcap of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Yet Nature magazine reports in its November 23, 2003 issue:
“Although it’s tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain’s foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests’ humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine.”
The African deserts are expanding due to global warming, warns Gore. Yet the Sept. 6 2002 edition of New Scientist says, “Africa’s deserts are in ‘spectacular’ retreat... making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa.”

Gore also claims Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. Yet a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology says, “The Greenland ice sheet is thinning and margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass again.” Taylor further notes that “in the late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.”
As for Gore’s claim that the Antarctic ice sheet is melting due to global warming, the Jan 2002 issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. Moreover, says Taylor, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that “satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003.” Further, The U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that “Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.” (14)
“If the atmosphere was a 100-story building...”
Along the same line, a new book entitled Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1500 Years, points to more than 300 scientists who found evidence that
- a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced a number of global warming similar to what is purportedly happening today, and
- the modern “warming” is linked strongly to variations in the sun’s radiance.
Although scientific papers refuting many aspects of the man-made global warming theory are published in prestigious journals such as Science, Nature and Geographical Review Letters, they receive virtually no media attention.

S. Fred Singer, a climate physicist who co-authored the book with Hudson Institute Senior Fellow David Avery, says “We’ve had Greenhouse Theory with no evidence to support it – except for a moderate warming turned into a scare by computer models whose results have never been verified with real world events.”
Singer also observes, “Humans have known since the invention of the telescope that the earth’s climate variations were linked to the sunspot cycle, but we have not understood how. Recent experiments have demonstrated that more or fewer cosmic rays hitting the earth create more or fewer of the low, cooling clouds that deflect solar heat back into space-amplifying small variations in the intensity of the sun.”
Co-author Avery says “Two thousand published histories say that warm periods were good for people. It was the harsh, unstable Dark Ages and Little Ice Age that brought bigger storms, untimely frost, widespread famine and plagues of deceases.” (15)

The growing library of books and papers written by reputable scientists refuting much of the global warming hysteria includes Shattered Consensus by Patrick M Michaels. This collection contains essays from various scientists, and includes serious challenges to the claim that human endeavors and CO2 emissions are the cause of global warming.
Likewise Mr. Reid Bryson, founding chairman of the Department of Meteorology at the University of Wisconsin, says that the temperature of the earth is increasing, but it has nothing do to with what man is doing. “You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling carbon dioxide,” he said. (16)
“Carbon dioxide is 0.000383 of our atmosphere by volume (0.038 percent),” said meteorologist Joseph D'Alea, the first Director of Meteorology at The Weather Channel and former chief of the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecast. “Only 2.75 percent of atmospheric CO2 is anthropogenic [generated by man] in origin. The amount we emit is said to be up from 1 percent a decade ago.” He continued. “Despite the increase in emissions, the rate of change of atmospheric carbon dioxide at Mauna Loa remains the same as the long term average (plus 0.45 percent per year),”
“We are responsible for just 0.001 percent of this atmosphere,” insists D’Alea. “If the atmosphere was a 100-story building, our anthropogenic CO2 contribution today would be equivalent to the linoleum on the first floor.” (17)
Scientists whose evidence defies man-made global warming scenarios groan at the multi-billion dollar government projects for reducing CO2. The policies, they insist, will do virtually nothing to change what they conclude to be a cycle of nature. One wonders how these scientists view the “Vatican Climate Forest” in Hungary planted to supposedly cancel out carbon emissions of Vatican City.
Gas shortages and population bombs
And yes, when it comes to media fueled panic at this level, we have a right to be skeptical. Recent history gives us good reason. The more trendy the cause, the more insistently the media clangs the alarm, the more we should be wary.
Remember the gas shortage? Years ago, when I played music for a living, I worked with Pat, a saxophonist whose father was an oil company executive. Pat said his father told him in the late 1960s, years before the alleged gas crunch in the early '70s, that the so-called gas shortage was coming and that it would all be a colossal fraud.

And how can we forget Paul Erhlich’s hysterical book The Population Bomb. In the late 60s, Ehrlick was predicting inevitable global famine, proclaiming that “the battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines. Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. Population control is the only answer.”
The mass starvation never happened, but Ehrlich was undeterred. He went on to predict global famine in 1985, which never happened either. In the late 1980s, he warned that the population of the United States would shrink from 250 million before 1999 due to famine and global warming. (18) He was wrong again.
Despite his career of groundless panic, shoddy science and false predictions, Paul Ehrlich has earned at least 15 prestigious awards, including the 1998 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the 1999 Blue Planet Prize, the 2001 Eminent Ecologist Award of the Ecological Society of America, and the Gold Medal Award from the World Wildlife Fund. How much more evidence does a sound mind need to question the science, the conclusions and the agenda of modern environmentalism?
Green confessions
The Pope’s enthusiasm for ecology already has its trickle-down effect on the clergy. The prize instance of clerical goofiness goes to Father Anthony Sutch, a Benedictine monk who set up eco-confessions at Waveney Green Peace Festival in Suffolk, England.

The London Times reported, “Vested in a green vestment-style garment made from recycled curtains, and in a booth constructed of recycled doors, he will hear the sins “of those who have not recycled the things they ought to have done, and who have consumed the things they ought not to have.”
Father Sutch said, “I hope it is not blasphemous to do this,” but added that he took comfort in the fact that Pope Benedict XVI is keen on environmental issues. “I know the Pope has now set up his own airline and will be planting trees every time it flies,” he said.
The Times reported three examples of Father Sutch’s “Green penances”:
- For boiling electric kettles filled with too much water: three cold baths
- For eating imported strawberries: A vegetarian diet of local food for a week;
- For traveling too much by plane and car: Pedal a bicycle-powered generator for a rock band for one gig. (20)
Can the lunacy become any more extreme?
The shred of Catholic sense still lingering in Father Sutch is correct: the eco-confessional is both blasphemous and sacrilegious. The holy sacrament instituted by Christ for the supernatural purpose of forgiveness of sins, a sacrament established by Our Divine Lord by the shedding of every drop of His Precious Blood on Calvary so that the redemptive power of His Blood could be poured upon penitents, is profaned for the sake of pagan naturalism. In response to Father Sutch’s sacrilege, there is no report he received the slightest reprimand from Church authorities.
This is what comes from attempting a synthesis between Catholicism and pagan environmentalism, from the Hegelian attempt to seek common ground between light and darkness, which is the hallmark of the post-Conciliar church. In this impossible dialectic, one does not elevate the other, but rather Catholicism is made a mockery. The degradation of Catholicism is exactly what the Pope fuels by following worldly trends rather than being the supernatural trendsetter his office demands him to be.
Courage?
And as far as the Pope’s eco-youth fest for cleaning up the planet, why direct this imperative to a rally of young people when it is the major corporations who do most of the polluting? Few will argue with the fact that big business bears most of the guilt on this score. Few will argue with the fact that the modern food industry actually corrupts our food, including the mandatory proliferation of genetically modified grain. So why tell the youngsters that they have to save the planet “before it’s too late”?
The answer is found in the words of Gypsy Rose Lee, you gotta have a gimmick!

It appears to me that these gigantic youth festivals are constantly in search of gimmicks; always something new, always something different, always something urgent to invest meaning into mammoth gatherings that are ultimately meaningless. So this year, a half million young people at Loreto were urged to save the planet, but were never reminded to save their souls. They were urged to make a “strong commitment” to end global warming, but were not pressed to make a strong commitment to publicly fight to end abortion. (21)
The Pope called upon the youth at Loreto to make “courageous choices” for the environment, but how much courage does it take for youngsters to fall in line with similar eco-initiatives now in vogue at godless universities? It is now chic to be Green, and it takes little courage to be chic.
As with every single youth gathering enacted since Pope John Paul II lifted the idea of youth-fests from Focolare, the young people at these gatherings are never really challenged. That would spoil the celebration. They are never told to resist the modern rock’n’roll pop-culture, since the rock’n’roll culture is the predominant atmosphere at these events. They are never warned about the danger of mortal sin; never warned specifically about sins against the sixth or ninth commandment; never reminded of Our Lady of Fatima’s admonition that “more souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than any other sin.”
Neither are the young people encouraged to dress modestly at all times. The vast majority of these misguided youngsters dress slovenly and immodestly even while receiving Communion at Papal Masses and are never corrected. Why not exhort them to courage for something that actually requires courage: resist modern fashions and adopt genuine Catholic standards of modesty.
The youth at these bashes are never really challenged to give up something they love: never challenged, for example, to stay away from bad movies and to boycott any theatre that shows bad films until the theater owner promises never to show such films again; as was the practice of the Legion of Decency before the Council. If 500,000 youngsters were to take that attitude to the streets after a youth conference, this would make an impact, and incur the wrath of the city of man.
No, the youth at these gatherings are never exhorted to true Catholic action. Neither are they urged to fight as soldiers of Christ against the ever-encroaching homosexual collective; a powerful and unscrupulous movement that looms as the next great persecutor of the Church worldwide.
If the Pope called young people to true Catholic causes, then maybe these youngsters would actually “make a difference” to the planet, not by running around with little hand-cranked battery chargers, but by fighting manfully in the social order to produce an environment conducive for the greatest number of souls to live their lives in sanctifying grace.
Anything less than this is a fraud. It panders to the enemy, and distracts the youngster from his true Catholic purpose.
